Meeting the class for the first time.
When meeting the class for the first time, it is important to prepare by having a copy of the syllabus for each student and give a over view of the class expectations so that each student understands what is expected of them.
Hugo,
I like the way you open your class because you give information about yourself and the class in segments. This way they don't become overwhelmed with information overload. By sharing this way you encourage interaction and sharing from the students in a way that helps them get a feel for the course and how it is going to be operated.

On my first day of class of course I give a short introduction of my self then as I take list I ask the students to tell me about them, if the work where they work, etc and expectation from the class. Then I give a more info about my background, hand them the syllabus and talk about the class rules and my expectation.
When I meet the students for the first time I set clear goals and explain the learning expectations up-front.
Erica,
This is an important way to start a class because it sets the boundaries for performance as well as lets them know your expectations. Then it is a building process from there.

That is the first day of class for me. That's where they get the sylabus and I let them know what behavior is expected in the class. That way th boundary is set and if they cross it, they already know the consequence of it.
Kathryn,
Learning things like this helps you to learn more about the students plus they appreciate the fact you are interested enough in them to ask them about their favorite song or type of music they like. This forms the foundation for the development of rapport.

It is very important to be fully prepared that first class. It lets the students know what you expect and shows them that you are a professional.
George,
Yes, it is. They need to feel comfortable and accepted in the class. When they feel this way they will open up and become part of the discussions.

I always have students tell each other what their favorite song is. It tells a lot about a person what type of music they listen to, and it builds bridges between people who may not have anything else in common.
it is important to get the students to relax so they can feel better about the class and have to develope an knowedgeable communication between all the students so that the questions that they ask are understood by all
Stephanie,
Right you are. Do you do ice breakers during you first class meeting and if so how do your students react to them?
