First Impression
I believe the story of success starts on the first day with a very strong, well organized introduction. So many characteristics are covered in the first day to set the stage for the rest of the semester. A clear and concise outline of the class along with the expectations of the instructor provide a strong foundation for the course.
Rollin,
I think this is valuable information for them to have so that they can understand that you have earned a living in the field that they are preparing to enter. You know how to be successful in the career and if they work hard and follow your lead they can be as well.

When I started my first class I gave my students a not to long but a good deatal of my background. To let them know I had alot of time in this field they are trying to learn.
Sean,
I support your assumption about the need for a strong first class session. This sets the tone for the upcoming class so the ice breakers and introductions help get the students settled into the class. In addition, clear and concise information about the course requirements will get everyone on the same page and ready to go.
