Always a good way to start
On the first day I always try to get a feel for the students and let them get a feel for me and what I will be instructing them on. I introduce myself and give a brief history of my skills, then go around the room and have the students tell me a brief summary of themselves as well
Paul,
Good way to connect their life experiences to the course content. This is how you increase the value of the content in the eyes of your students and helps to engage them at a higher level.

I like to tell my students that they all have experiences to bring and share with the class. Then I stress my desire to see that each student leave the class with more knowledge and understanding of the subject than they brought. That is why it is important to get to know the students and find out their knowledge level of the subject material.
