Meeting the class for the first time
To help your students know hoe to study for your course it woukld be helpful if you give them study guides and suggestions for taking notes.

Even still, students must be urged to read. All too often, they gloss over study guides or they superficially review the suggested course content. Critical thinking and reading skills must be encouraged.

It seems that many students do not have good study skills so by providing them with study aids and supports you are being of great help in their success in the course. Guided notes and study guides are such great devices to keep students zeroed in on what they key concepts are and why they need to know them.
