Introductions

By introducing yourself to the students and having the students introduce themselves, it breaks the ice for them and as well as for the instructor.

I first start off by introducing myself including my education and work experience. I then have introduction questions for the students on the broad. This provides them with an opportunity to introduce themselves to the class and myself. I have found this to be a great icebreaker.

Excellent recommendation on the student introductions.

On the first day I like to give the students my own background story, and then go around the room and have each student do the same. Because not only are you meeting the students for the first time, but the students are also meeting each other for the first time as well. This helps to start a positive feeling in the classroom and students are then more likely to contribute in class discussions.

Adrian,
I enjoy introductions at the beginning of a course because I learn so much about the students and the background experiences they bring to the course. I am always amazed at the diversity of experiences they have and I look forward to using those experiences to build on in the coming course. Fun time for all.

it will also help you identify different personalities. who's shy or outgoing and eager

By introducing yourself to the class you can also get a sense how the student feels about the class and makes them feel more comfortable with the class enviroment.

Marvis,
This is a good way to get everyone settled into the course and learning more about their class mates as well as their instructor. This sets the stage for a very successful course to come and everyone is on the same page.
