There are simple little motivators that you can use, such as comments that you write on their papers, telling them what they did correct as the completed the writing and/or skill activity. Occasionally having a food party (pizza, cake, cookies, etc.) at the end of a challenging unit works. Encouraging and supportive words from you as a student enters or is leaving the class really helps them to stay motivated. A real good guide is the "Golden Rule" of teaching. Treat them as you would want to be treated and motivation will follow.
Another good motivating technique is to have graduates come in and talk about their education and how they are using it in the field. Students really get excited about these speakers.
