Learning styles

It still amazes me how instructors fail to vary their instructional styles for the benefit of students. I had a professor in grad school who was considered an expert who would drone on for hours about his subject. It was excrutiating.

Kimberly,
Good overview of what an instructor should be. Thanks for sharing these comments with us.

Instructors need to keep the class fun while still educating the students. Professionalism must not be compromised.Instructors must be adaptable to the class they are teaching and generate motivation. I make my classes fun by changing it up all the time. I see what the class attitude is (i.e. tired from working all day) and accomplish the learning even if it requires giving the quiz first or last and then lecture etc.

i like the thought of changing it up a bit and trying all the differnt learning styles. not only does it seem to help the students but it also makes the teaching experience fun for me. we're not always stuck on routine.

I have told my students before that their instructors are always going to teach using different methods. I tell them not to look at this as good and bad instructors but to look it as a tool to help them and find out what method of teaching they relate to most.

I also wonder why an instructor would want to lecture the whole time. Class can be so much more exciting and benefical if we add other learning styles to our teaching methods. Breaks things up, keeps students (and you for that matter) interested in what is going on. Also, if you are teaching the same class quarter after quarter, you would think you would get quite sick of listening to yourself. By involving other methods besides leture, each class can take on a life of its own rather than all being the same.

i think defferent students have defferent learning styles, so it is important to vary teaching styles.

Hi Mike,
I think I had that same professor. As instructors we need to be looking for ways to make our delivery dynamic and focused. This is the only way we are going to be able to keep our students engaged in the learning process.
