I have found that when course content is supported by my own professional experiences, or by my student's own experiences, it is usually remembered by the class better than when presented as simply text or other traditional methods.
I agree, they need to feel that this really will help them out in their chosen career.
Relating to professional experiences aids in grabbing the student’s attention, relying on the fact that many of them are excited about the field. They are egger to hear what it might be like when they graduate. They associate the material as relevant because you are directly connecting it to real world experience. If students just read something from a book, they wonder how relevant it is and if this information is necessary.
