I think it is overwhelmingly important to make sure you know about your students' various backgrounds and interests. Once you do, you can play off of these as a way to build interest. Engaging students also depends heavily on your ability to teach to various learning styles. Although it may be impossible to teach to each learning style every class, changing up the mode of teaching from class to class definitely helps.
