Student Teachers
So I implemented dividing my students into 3 groups and having each group present a topic to the class. It didn't go over as well as i thought it would. The class didn't get out of it the information they needed as well as when I present the material...I think that perhaps I need to guide the student groups more, maybe Give them an outline of specific things I'm looking for them to present? Any other ideas? I did give them each 3 questions they needed to answer, but they ended up just reading out of the book and not interpreting the information into easy to remember information.
I typically find that this format works well in my classroom as well, Sheri. It gives the students the chance to express themselves in their own creative way, allowing the "star student" to shine, and the other students to follow their lead.
I have also discovered that at this point, they go over homework, and study habits as well. They want to know what makes the "star student" so successful and they often copy his/her study habits and generate their own desired success in the program.
I found this works with hands on learning.
I will demonstrate the procedure, have students pair up and practice the procedure on each other. Working with each group individually, recognizing who has a strength and who has a weakness. I switch student partners, pairing one with the strength & one with the weakness. The student with the strength is the leader, having the student with the weakness follow, practicing the procedure, this helps build confidence in the student with the weakness.
Thanks Gary,
Good ideas, I'll give them a try. I think the students enjoyed the change, now it's just perfecting it!
Hi Jennifer,
Sorry to hear about the group presentations not going as well as you would like. I would suggest you give them a structured outline to follow for their presentations. This way you can guide them on what you want them to present as you mentioned. Many of them as you have seen don't know how to structure a presentation. The outline will give them the guidance they need. Also, you can have them submit a pre-presentation guideline to you to see if they have got "it". A might also want to give them a graphic organizer to help them follow step by step the preparation and presentation of the content.
Any other questions please let me know.
Gary
