When teaching new classes

Is it ok to let new students know about past unsuccessful behaviors from past students.

Hi Anthony,
Good way to reinforce the value of effort. By telling students about how previous students put forth effort and were successful you are helping them to see how they can be successful as well.
Gary

You can use past student behavior to prove a point. For example, student whom put in extra time at home reading or studing, their grades usually reflect that.

Hi Jeff,
Good point. The students need to know expectations of both work and behavior. They also need to know what will happen if they do not follow the course requirements.
Gary

I would also ensure you mention what happened to those students as a result of their behavior.

Hi Joseph,
As examples yes. Of course no one person would be identified in sharing the example. I will tell my current students that I had a student do something that helped him secure the position or I will say I had a student that did something that cost him the position. These examples are used at different points in the course to reinforce what I am teaching at the time. They really get the attention of current students.
