Lectures

I won't disclose the course I teach, but it is basically like learning a new language, that lends itself more to a lecture-type format. I learned the material initially by taking an hour each day and writing out each term I recalled, spelling it correctly, and noting what it meant. I did this without looking at notes or books; it really helped me to remember it, and I pass this along to students to try. I do, however, need to incorporate more learning formats. I am considering adding a short (5 min.) individual presentation on certain topics for each student to do, or worksheets to be performed as homework or in small groups.

Hi Ann,
Good advice for all instructors. Through planning and practice you are ready to share content in a way that is interesting and engaging for students.

It is hard to start lecturing. I always practice before presenting! Get there attention! Show them you love teaching.

IT'S HARD AT FIRST TO START LECTURING YOU'RE NOT SURE OF YOURSELF AND THEN YOU ALWAYS HAVE ONE STUDENT THAT JUST KEEPS ASKING WHERE ARE YOU IN THE TEXT AND SOMEHOW THAT GETS YOU MOVIATED MORE TO REALLY START AND THAT LET'S THE STUDENTS KNOW YOU REALLY ARE THINGING ABOUT THEM AND NOT JUST A PAY CHECK.

Hi Rick,
First, I can really appreciate your discipline to your field. You have made the terms of your field a permanent part of your life and that helps you to be the expert that you are. As for adding the the additional input opportunities to your class I think you are going to really enjoy the results you get. They will help the students to remain engaged throughout the course.
