Adult Attention Span
Attention span in an adult from 15-18 is mostly accurate. When you present a presentation keep in mind the lights is dim, the focus on how many slides should be limited (10-15)to avoid confusion, not focused on the subject.
There are far more yawns and sighs when some discussion about the topic is planned.
Diane,
This is a good strategy because it keeps their attention as well lets them use the newly acquired content in their small groups. This reinforces retention and application of new material.

Since adult attention span id 15-18 minutes lectures should not be any longer instead have students work hands on if possible or get them into small groups.
Depending on the content covered or discussed in class will help the instructor decide what methods to use in class. For instance, if I am teaching a lab course, on half of the class would be used to lecture the students on how to perform a specific lab test and the other half would be used to actually perform the exam. If a student does not pay attention to the first portion of the course, they will not be able to perform in the second half.
