Lisa,
Humor is a powerful tool for engaging and focusing students. Use it to offer variety and change of pace in the flow of information.
Gary
I like to use some humor during lectures. Seems to keep students more interested.
Ann,
I think you will really like the way the class flows and how much your students enjoy the change of pace.
Gary
Salvador,
I agree. I like to use learning groups as well. They need to learn to respect and work with each other because that is what they will be doing out in the work world.
Gary
Cassandra,
This is so important to do to keep the students engaged. Good way to help the students to see the value of what you are teaching as well helping them to acquire new knowledge.
Gary
It has become very clear to me that it is a must to use some video, You Tube or another type of content to augment the traditional lecture and even PPT. Our world of instruction almost demands it. I must say using it sometimes takes the heat of me - I can't draw and the new techno content is way better at making a visual point then I am.
I'm excited to try out the 'mini-lectures'! I sometimes see my students' attention waning when my lectures are long- I'm going to start tomorrow!
keeping students engaged is a work in progress, students must be educated with some tang a new work educatane
• Encourage communication between the teacher and the students and also between the students.
This is a great question. Here are some ways that I like to keep students engaged throughout the class.
• Encourage student critical thinking and inquiry by asking them thoughtful, open-ended questions, and encourage them to ask questions to each other.
• A struggling student also needs follow-ups and constant boosts of encouragement and care. Warmth, empathy combined with a reinforcement of rules and policies is the approach for these students and also to respect diverse learning styles
• Ask follow up questions and seek elaboration after a student's initial response.
• Frequent contact between professor and student. A visible engaging presence.
• Give prompt feedback.
I think it is a positive practice to allow student to work on projects in pairs, or as a team. Give realistic, authentic prompts from the work place that they could very well experience in the future.
As an instructor you need to provide real life case studies that people can relate too and be able to utilize higher level thinking skills to learn through group or class discussions. Also, the use of Socratic Seminars are extremely helpful in that people can share aspects of theory and practices and demonstration with there peers. Also, invite real experts from the field to engage with your students real workplace experiences to motivate learning.
I like to change strategies often to keep students attention, if i have to lecture its done with power point or a worksheet to get the students reading their chapters, without viewing as book work.
Hello Robert
Yes I agree. I like to play the millionare or hollywood squares this helps when we review for exams.
Cece
I tempt them along by promising that if they learn a task "the hard way", I'll then also teach them the "easy" or "industry"way.
Short lectures and videos are great. You can change the pitch of your voice to enfisice an important area. Sometimes louder is better.
Kenton,
A very nice blend of different learning opportunities and options. These different methods will help to keep the students engaged throughout the classes.
Gary
I try to integrate a variety of strategies to keep students actively and meaningfully engaged in the learning process. This prevents predictability and routine of instructional delivery. By varying lecture, cooperative learning groups, computer assisted instruction, student/instructor dialogue and partner work, my students appear to maintain focus and interest in the learning process.
Karin,
Great way to show application and relevancy to what they are being taught. This sounds like a fun activity.
Gary
I like to keep students engaged with watching the elements or tools around them. Instead of waiting for a client to come to them. We do things like watcing people walk in a parking lot to see how their gate is and we evaluate them. We will notice things like what arm they carry things.
