Mix and Match

The way that information is presented today is much different than when I was a kid, long hours of pure expository lecture is the old way of doing things. Not that the style of lecture doesn’t still hold a place in the classroom but combination techniques seem to be a good way to shift a drifting attention span back on to a subject. By incorporating interactive ability, problem solving and case study concepts attention can be returned to a subject.

Ethel,
I am a big game and prize person as well. I use games and prizes for the reasons you have stated plus both make learning fun. Everyone is a child in some ways, the adults are just taller.

I personally like to play BINGO games for their Anatomy review or even a Pharmacology drug review. At the end of the game everyone has won at least one of the following items: calculator, ruler, highlighters, white out, notebook paper, etc. The point is they are all interacting and having fun together, while learning. They win things that they need for my class. These items are at the Dollar store. They also receive stickers on their papers, some collect them on their drug card boxes. Adults like to be awarded even as the young learners of today. Giving the stickers out also makes the student work hard each time to get a new sticker; for a sense of accomplishment.

Rick,
An interesting insight into what abilities your current students are bringing into your class. They have an experience base that helps them be successful in visualizing different perspectives of objects that are being shared in the video.

I present a video in my blueprint reading class. It is on "View Identification." It has convinced me of how students today are such visual learners. I go through this one time and an extremely high percentage of the students gain a good grasp of the concepts.
