You want what?

Do your students know what to expect from your class. What will they be learning? Will it be presented in such a way that they will remember what you said.

Georgette,
Thank you for sharing your student experience because even though a bit painful at the time with the loss of points has helped you to be an even better instructor today. You know the value of having clear and concise information both as a student and as a faculty member. Your students are not going to have to experience what you did because you are going to make they have reviewed the syllabus and are informed.

Ensuring that our students know what material will be covered, timeframes, grading policies, etc., etc., can't be over emphasized. As a new adult learner years ago, the instructor neglected to review the syllabus, and I neglected to read it when it was distributed. Each student had to give a presentation and there was a time limit to it. Well, needless to say I didn't realize that and went well over the alloted time of 20 minutes for which points were deducted. Never will I, as an instructor, fail to review the syllabus.

Carla,
Good questions that are always asked by students. These questions need to be answered at the beginning of class so the students can get settled in and comfortable with how the class is going to function.
