Engagement
Lectures can be informative and can hold the attention of the class, but, I find that being engaging helps. I walk into the class, address students who seem distracted, puzzled, bored. I don't work from the podium.
William,
Good point. The more engaged they are the longer that will stay in the learning mode.

By engaging the students, I find you keep the focus of the students longer.
William,
I think you are going to like the results you get with this approach. By introducing a change of pace after 15-20 minutes of lecture if it is only to review, have a Q&A, or case study the students get to refocus and use some of their newly acquired knowledge.

i sat in on a few classes and found that after 15 min the students tended to loose focus. i plan on going into a review after 15-20 min to keep the info fresh in there minds and guage if i need to go over any info that i lechered on
Loren,
You need to "own" the classroom and by moving about and engaging your students in discussion you are showing them that every student is special and that you want input from each student.
