i very much agree being yourself and a sincere smile gway!

A positive first impression will help calm the students and help you start the course on a good foot

I agree that the first impression is very important in any situation. All eyes are on you. It is important to be yourself and make sure you are positive and aware of your importance to the class. The first time they see and hear you will be with them for a long time so make sure your are dressed properly and be willing to talk about the student's apprehensions to put them at ease. A smile goes a long way in making them comfortable so be pleasant and be interested in their concerns. Norma Liberatore

A positive first impression not only puts students at ease and reduces their stress about a new class and new teacher, it prevents future misunderestangs. It creates a pleasant environment of learling/teaching from outset and keeps the line of communication open and available.

You only get one chance to make that first impression. Students will remember exactly what you did, how you acted, what you said or what you didn't say. They are all focused on you, one person and you have to memorize and focus on 15-30 students. Positive, professional first impressions develop trust and confidence with the student. Being clear of expectation, policies and procedures you express to the. Give them standards of expectation for the days to come.

Hi Patrick,
Classroom culture is so powerful in the learning process. A positive classroom environment with a supportive instructor does much to set the stage for successful learning and increased student retention.

It sets the tone of the course, culture of the class room and how you will be perceived as an instructor. Students want a positive learning environment. An instructor should a be a positive leader and role model.

first impressions are a must if you want to get the outcome you deserve from the students. Be prepared

STUDENTS THESE DAYS ARE FACING SO MANY MORE PERSONAL PROBLEMS, THAT THEY NEED TO KNOW THAT THEY HAVE A TACHER THAT THEY CAN RELATE TO . IF YOU MAKE THAT BOND YOU WILL HAVE ESTABLISHED THE FIRST STEP IN THE LEARNING CURVE.

Hi Wendy,
Good planning and preparation really helps to get the course off in a good way. A easy going opening of class the first day with some ice breakers and a discussion of the course requirements, polices and expectations as outlined in the syllabus really helps to set the stage for success.
Gary

I agree that it's the best thing to do from the beginning. There is no easy way out but to get it right from the beginning and elimating any potential problems or concerns

Keeping in mind the tdhree P's, preparation, prepartion... Keeping organized and well read on your topic etc.

Making a positive first impression will help both your students and yourself feel more comfortable during class time.

After the first class they will have an idea of what to expect from you, if you are a push over, very strict, if you are open to their concerns and problems. At the same time it will allow you to connect with them and encourage them that they can do very well in this class by meeting requirements you set for them right away

A positive first impression can make the entire quarter be more successful for the student as they will feel comfortable in sharing thier information and /or concerns.

A positive first impression is essential to building rapport with your students. This means you should arrive on time, be prepared, and have all necessary materials for class. You must set standards for your class on the very first day, otherwise students will take advantage of any areas in which you are lax.

Your first impression is huge. This allows the students to view you for what you require for success. As well as your personallity

Making a positive first impression tends to relieve stress and set students in a positive learning environment. It is also an excellent motivator.

You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.

Making a positive first impression is very important because it sets the atmosphere for a successful class. It allows the instructor and class to feel "at ease".

A positive first impression lets the students know that I enjoy what I am teaching and that I feel it is valuable information that they need to have for their future career. I tell them that they will enjoy learning this new information and therefore try to promote a positive attitude in them, towards the material they are going to learn. Starting off on a positive note sets the tone for the remainder of the course.
