2-way street

The discussion in my classroom goes both ways. I demonstrate a method (teaching math), then work some examples. The example is an interactive session, I ask "What do I do next?"

I state my expectations of them, "If you do not ask any questions, I will assume you understand the material." I begin every class with asking for questions. The testing process is frequent, providing feedback to them on their learning and to me on my teaching.

Tanya,
Good way to ease into the class and determine what needs to be reinforced and what to cover in the upcoming session.

Some student are timid to ask questions. I start each class with questions to them recapping yesterdays lecture.

April,
Q&A sessions if managed well can be dynamic learning opportunities for students. You are right on with you comments about how questions can show us if we are getting our points across to our students.

I like the idea of interacting with the students through questions. It allows us to analyze where they are sitting and if they are really getting the concept. I too stress the importance of asking questions the question unasked leads me to believe there is no problems.

Norman,
Checking for understanding is so important to do on a regular basis. You are doing that with your approach. Keep calling on them to tell what to do next so you all will end up at the same place at the end of the course.
