course content

I enjoy having students teach topics that relate to chapter information. The delivery from another source other than the instructor can be just what is needed for a dynamic lecture.

Patricia,
I like and use this format as well for the reasons you list. Using this instructional strategy really increases the content retention rate for students because they have had to really get deep into the material in order to be able to teach it.

Hello Dr. Meers and Patricia: I also know a saying about this type of strategy: "If you want to learning something, teach it!". I believe this saying also relates to our students, and I use this activity often. However, I have the students work in cooperative groups of 4 or 5 learners. I have found that the students become accountable to their group members as well as the rest of the class. Plus, I become a guide -rather than the lecturer- and I believe both my students and I enjoy this type of learning better. Often, students have far too many lectures in college and I do not want to contribute to that style of lesson presentation.

Patricia,
There is a saying about this. "To teach is to learn twice, once as a student and another as a teacher." By having your students do presentations they get to share what they have learned and the retention of this content is greatly increased.
