I agree, I like this strategy as well. I like games that enforce the terms for the subject being taught. Very exciting and rewarding for the students.

Leann,
Students love to hear stories from the field. These stories help to make the content they are studying come alive and shows them how what they are learning will be used in their careers.

Frank,
Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery. Your approach is doing that and I am sure your are enjoying the engagement you get from your students as a result.

I find sharing stories related to my field of experience is helpful.

I continually change the pace or perhaps the volumn of my speach . I ask questions every few minutes to keep the students engaged .

Uzma,
You are on target with this approach. You are helping them to learn new material and then apply what they have learned. This is how segmented learning should work.

I think breaking lecture into smaller blocks and then have a little discussion part can create better learning environment ,keeping adult learning span in my mind

Marc,
Students like variety and change of pace in their instruction. You are providing both with your approach and I know this keeps them engaged and focused for the duration of your course.

Implementing multiple activities and discussions between lectures has worked.

Lisa,
Yes the do because they help to keep the focus of the students with the presentation of the content and then an activity. This gets them to integrate both knowledge and application in the learning process.

I usually introduce a topic and lecture on it for a few minutes. I will then have the class do an activity that reinforces the concept I just introduced. I will also incorporate a variety of examples to illustrate a point. Sometimes this may consist of a current events magazine article, or even a few minutes from a film.

Mini lectures work well with some activity involved in between such as a game utilizing course material we have discussed.

Shannon,
The more they can connect the content with the real world the more valuable the content becomes. Also, their motivation increases when they see what is being taught as having application to their future.

Absolutely true, and a lot of times they bring a lot more practical, real-world experience with them to share.

Dorothy,
All of these strategies help students to become engaged in the learning process. By appealing to the different learning preferences of students you are helping them to acquire the needed content through venues that are supportive of their learning.

Present material to accommodate several learning styles, ask open ended questions that will encourage class discussion and share my personal experiences in the field which I am teaching are only a few of the strategies I use to engage my students.

Byron,
These longer classes are tough. I teach a 6 hour class from 4 until 10 pm so I can relate to the planning that has to be done to keep a course of this length interesting to students. Variety and change of pace are two parts of the planning process that need to be included so students will remain engaged for the duration. Sounds like you have the right balance going for your students. Keep up the good work.

John,
You have a good blend in your instructional delivery. You are right about the need to help your students to personalize the content. The more relevancy and application they can see the more they will value the content. Keep up your efforts as they are impacting the lives of your students and how they are being prepared for their future.

One of my classes is 5 hours long with a lot of PowerPoint. I try to mix it up a lot, otherwise my students have a hard time staying on track. And sometimes we all just need a 5 min break.
