I like to use the VAK system to keep students engaged in learning. By using PowerPoint, audio, and then hands-on, I've notice that my students, not only stay engaged, but often don't want to leave my classroom after class is over.
Some strategies for keeping students engaged in learning is:
1. While lecturing, remain in contact with each student as much as possible so they feel engaged, via eye contact facial expression and mannerisms.
2. Ask the students questions. Inquire on their on personal assumptions. Ask for their feedback. Question why and how their answers may be useful.
3. If lecturing, do mini-luctures- 10 to 15 minutes long. the Adult attention span is 1-0-18 minutes. this will prevent distraction and fatique of students and reduces attention problems.
4. Engage with the students as much as possible. Make the enviornment interactive, fun and use different delivery methods to target all types of learning styles.
I think if you are passionate about your subject your students will be engaged with learning about the subject.
Having students apply what they learn ASAP - in my case, taking vital signs.
