Trial and error
Teaching Trial and error
Brian,
This is a critical point that students need to understand. So they can experiment and learn while in a protected setting and then can grow from there to become successful.

When teaching truck powertrains to students, I also want them to get all of their trial and error out of the way in the safety of our lab. Out in the field, trial with error could equal death. We make sure to stress in lab what are the most likely hazards with each task.
Brian,
You make a very good point and one that the students need to understand and benefit from. Otherwise the consequences could create consequences on one wants to encounter.

Alex,
This is what instructional scaffolding should be about. The students see and connect the content in a sequence as it builds to the next level of information and then the next. Along with this should come application and expanded expertise. As you say this is when the excitement factor starts to kick in.

Very true! The material I cover requires many skills and concepts from previous modules. If an area is misunderstood it will have roots from previous failings.
When a new module is introduced, I'll foreshadow the connection of skills and knowledge from previous chapters to what we'll be covering next. A lot of times this stirs up excitement for the future.
I completely understand...that life is full of trial and error. Sometimes students will have to re-learn material that they did not comprehend on the first attempt.
Thomas,
So true and so important in the learning process of students. Through trial and error the students are going to refine their skills and learn what does and does not work for them as they expand their expertise.

Amity,
As a result of learning this way the retention of the procedures will be greatly increased in the working memories of the students. They are going to grow in their knowledge and expertise while making the applications that came out of the trial and error sessions.

as a welding instructor most of our learning is by trial and error.trial and error is very important because it gives students a real world experience on what they are trying to learn.
As a cosmetology instructor often most of my students learn by trial and error. It is also a lot of observation during demonstrations and the hands on learning.
Sean,
Not sure what you mean by this comment. Can you expand the comment to share your thoughts on this? Thanks.
