You can better taylor your teasching method to include all the styles. This is so all of your students can receive the information by means that suite thier learning needs.

assessing individual learning styles will help in knowing how and what ways to deliver the material to reach all the students. to be able to keep the students involved, active, and enthusiastic about their education. I believe this will keep them more receptive as a group!

being a new instructor this will help me understand my students needs better

By learning the method to quickly communicate, my short 3 week class is much more smooth for every one in the class. I have learned that the students themselves will tell me the learning style they prefer and sometimes I have the students explain things to one another because I can see sometimes I'm not getting through. This has helped me more than once to understand learning styles.

If you can taylor your class to the types of learners you can reach more students and keep their attention.

The instructional benefits of knowing the learning styles of students will be to tailor the message according to the learning styles of the students and that in turn will help in the effectiveness of learning of the students.

The instructional benefits of knowing the learning styles of my students is that I can gear the teaching method I use to the way they learn. For the auditory learners, I lecture. For the visual learners, I use powerpoint presentations. For the written learners, I assign textbook assignments and for the kinesthetic learners, I assign hands-on practice.

By using these methodologies, I have learned to reach out to all students rather than just a few. It has enabled me to become more effective in my course.

Knowing that I am a visual learner has helped me in learning since I tune in to the visual methods of learning, for example, Powerpoint presentations. In our course content delivery, we should try to incorporate all of the four major learning styles. When students struggle with course material, it is easier to assist them if we (and they) are aware of their learning styles. For example, I have suggested that some of my students, who are auditory learners, tape record the classes and listen to them on their way home to reinforce what they heard class that day. Even though I am a visual learner, this worked well for me when I was in college since I had a long drive to and from school.

As teachers we must make sure that our students comprehend and retain the lessons. It is important to know the learning style of the students because it allows us to help the students in the learning process and make it easier for them to do the work as well as enjoy the class. We have all sat in boring classes and I always strive to be an interesting teacher to all my students.

the entertainment value seem to b common link to education... just go to any comedy club... afterwords most people remember something of the event...good or bad...we just have to concentrate on the positive element of our content

It will be very interesting to test the students. I can't wait to check the website out.

Hi Bronna- I read an interesting study published in the College Student Journal in March 2002 that discusses stress experienced by students faced with taking exams. It concludes that students that have an analytic coping style that basically involves planning to prepare for and pass the exam results in reduced stress, while students that have an avoidance coping style experience greater stress. Please, tell me a little more about learning styles and stress. I am curious to know how to advise students that often say, “this is stressing me out.”

Absolutely, Nancy! And it appears that you are already addressing all the learning styles in your instruction. I liked your comment - in essence every really good instructor IS a performer - constantly doing their best to connect with their audience.

Isn't it possible to use all four of the learning types in each class to some extent? Very few of our students are auditory, for some reason. And most of them not only need to see words on the board, but an animated lecture seems to make it easier for them to understand. My usual lecture on comma confidence includes stirring up oatmeal cookies in pantomine and throwing in commas like raisins in oatmeal cookies. I rhyme some advice: when in doubt, leave it out! and we repeat little tidbits like that as I ask them what advice to give others about commas. We do the same thing for mnemonic devices for words like accept--the c's are the hands--and except where the x is our arms crossed to leave something out or refuse something. Sometimes I almost feel like a performer when I illustrate punctuation like colons and exclamation points.

In my ten-years' experience as an instructor, the value of knowing the learning styles of the students is imperative. It not only is of assistance to the student but it helps to solidify the whole process (preparing curriculum, lesson plans, visuals, practical applications).

By gearing things so that all students, whatever learning style they may possess, are part of the class discussions, etc., makes it a more relaxed atmosphere for all involved.

I guess a simple answer would be if you know how your students learn, than you don't have to go over the same thing over and over again.

You're quite correct Angela, especially in career schools competencies must be learned and demonstrated for as you mention, the consequesnces can be devastating. Similarly, instructors should be able to identify learning styles and adjust their instruction to meet the needs of their students.

The instructional benefits of knowing the learning style of our students would be so that each of our students can succeed and do well out in their field. I have come across some students that do not know much of what they are supposed to be learning... I work in an allied health school, so if these students do not learn and know how to do something as easy as charting correctly, it could have some serious effects on people's lives. If instructors were to learn the different styles of teaching, there would be an greater outcome of knowledgeable students going out into the job field.

Knowing that my students are visual learners helps me taylor my instruction to their interests. I could talk all day long about how to photograph a portrait, but if my students never actually get to take a portrait, they will never understand how it works.
