Learning Styles

It is important to know the learning styles of our student to assist us in the planning course and deliver the material in a way that the students can most benefit. The learning styles affect how a person retains information, acts in the class, solves problems, shares in groups, etc.
I had to learn these same learning types for several classes in college, but I think the repetition of it and learning them from a teacher’s perspective only enhances my base knowledge of the subject. I hope that, although I am an online instructor, I strive to touch on all types of learning mentioned in this module.

Hi Michael, Thanks for your post to the forum. We of course have limits as to what we can do to control the physical aspects of our classrooms. The best advice I can give is to do whatever is possible to make sure your students are comfortable. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I always try different learning style, but because I have a large class of more than forty students the challenge is very complex. I try to do different things to accomodate the different leaning or students I have. Is any other thing I can do to help with the environmental conditions of the classroom.

Hi Lolita- Thank you for your post to the forum. Could you possibly record the online "lecture" materials with your own voice and offer them to students in CD form? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

The auditory learning style is the one I use the least in my online course. I have added a few screencast presentations recently but I could do more to help these learners.

I too am an online instructor. Sometimes, I feel the best approach in this genre is to consistently check in with students about their progress. The online learning environment adds so many variables to the learning process as there is less face-to-face interaction. This is especially true for learners who learn by doing.

Hi Barbara- Thanks for your post to the forum. Students really do want to be an active part of their own learning. We have a faculty development class that we call "Burn the Podium!" Each participant gets a symbolic pack of matches. ;-)

Best wishes- Susan

As a rule, I try to incorporate several different types of learning styles; however, I find that “active learning” is the most successful form of teaching/learning. Alternatively, lecture, by far, is the least effective with most students.

Hi Heather- Thanks for your post to the forum! Teaching online has its' own set of challenges in terms of teaching to the learning styles. Best wishes- Susan
