Students Preference

In designing how to present curriculum to a new class how would one go about learn how the students in the new class prefer to receive the information?

You're welcome Julian- Best wishes! Susan

Thanks Susan great insight... I will work on implementing a variety into my class.

Hi Charles - thanks for your post to the forum. I would not switch to using totally kenesthetic delivery. In fact, it is never a good idea to soley use one style. I would, however, add some tactile content. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Susan, I have 8 students and all but one seems to prefer the auditory and visual learning styles. That is, they want the lectures with powerpoint and video clips. Should I change the way I teach just for the one student who prefers tactile or kinesthetic?

Hi Walter - Thanks for your post to the forum. I would advise adding videos to your lectures regularly. When you are lecturing about a specific component, try to have that available in the lecture room for your students to examine. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Teaching in a motorcycle tech school how do keep class room interesting when all the students want to do is lab work.

Hi Jennifer- Thanks for your post to the forum! Why can't "mixing it up" be consistent? Your students will get used to the idea that in almost every class they will see lecture, visual aids, and hands-on activities. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

We use the computer web base then lecture on the subject then it is lab time to see what they learned

I try to add several methods of teaching into my courses to "mix it up" and I somtimes worry that it can be somewhat confusing for the learner who likes one style or needs things scheduled or consistent. Any ideas on this?

So many students seem to be visual and hands-on techniques and video seems the way of the future. They are also good at multitasking, so more things the better :)

Hi Julian - thanks for your post to the forum. I think that the best way to handle any new class is to assume that they will have diverse learning styles. As I always stress, this means making every effort to "mix up" your delivery style. Lecture a bit, do soemthing hands on, share pictures or show a video clip etc. Not only will you be addressing every learning style but you will find that it keeps your teaching fresh and exciting. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
