Integrating learning styles
I primarily teach human resources. When giving an introduction course, or even the master level strategic human resource course, I also make sure to integrate different learning styles throughout the course materials.
This is sometimes difficult with a topic such as HR, where it is hard to get some hands on work. I have found that short case studies, related to the current materials seem to be very effective. This, supplemented with reading, discussion and videos has proven to be quite well received by many students.
I agree, Joseph. It is amazing how much I discover about student comprehension and reading ability having them read aloud. I also teach speech and have plenty of opportunities to teach students correct pronunciations. I love vocabulary so make the students look up the etymology of words that we read.
I must see students read aloud. This provides me with knowledge of their command of the Engilsh language, their spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary and reading comprehension. If they dont understand what it is theyre required to read it seems almost futile.
Hi Daniel- Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using some great techniques to incorporate diverse learning styles into your classes. Have you tried role-playing? It is really effective in HR instruction. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
