I agree! A few positive words can make a world of difference for our students. I try and provide my students positive feedback when they're struggling so that see I really am there to help. Also, I send emails (I teach online) to my students that are making great grades in my class to tell them how much I appreciate their hard work. It's amazing to hear back from so many of them that say I'm the first teacher sending them such positive feedback.

Hi Sharlen- It is instructors like you that can indeed make a difference in the lives of so many students! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hello,Yes letting students know that you care and want them to learn the material can go a long ways. I had a student who had such a bad attitude and when she missed two times in a row, I emailed her and told her I was concerned about her and that she had the potential to do great things in her profession. She emailed me back and said I was the first instructor who had ever encouraged her – isn’t that sad? Sometimes a seemingly small act can make a big difference.

Hi Phillip- Thanks for your post to the forum. Your words are so important. We need to get to know our students and in the best possible world get "heads ups" from our admissions folks to be able to handle our students difficult circumstances from the beginning of their studies!
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Instructors need to have empathy with their students. My students often come from difficult life situations and need encouragement, support, and understanding. To help students succeed, we cannot ignore these backgrounds and situations.

Yes, i agree teachers wear many different hats: teachers, advising, tutoring, motivator, cheerleader for our students

I agree teaching requires that you sometimes comfort, listen, and assist students with life issues.
