Learning Styles
What do you feel the best learning style is for today's youth?
I totally agree, students these days certainly need to see real life relevance. However, I do find my younger students have shorter attention spans (I hope I am not generalizing too much). Does anyone have a suggestion on a teaching method to cope with this? Is "there an App for that" :)
Hi Lonnie- You put it so well - students need to know how what they are learning is relevant to their careers. Susan
I like your analogy of students being customers in a store. If I can bring value to a subject or topic of the day I've got their interest and usually participation. What the students really want to know is "What am I learning and how do I use it".
Hi Joe- Enabling your students to see the relevance of what they are learning is indeed very important! It also significantly boosts their retention of the material. Susan
I believe that most of our youth are like customers in a store. They need to see some value in what they are learning, otherwise they will exit the store. I often try to lace the daily topic into a relevant scenario that they might encounter in the real world.

Great idea having extra assignments ready ahead of time. So often there are days where there just isn't enough to occupy the high achievers. I can't teach up to them for fear of losing the more marginal learners and I can't teach down to the slower students for fear of frustrating the better ones. You have to find a middle ground and have those extra assignments ready like you suggest.

Hi John - Thanks for your post to the forum. Because our brains are "wired" so differently, there is no "best" learning style for any age group. This is why we need to do our best to teach to all the styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi John,
Thanks for the question. Today’s youth are definitely fast learners who want to get things rolling straight away, they absolutely want to learn something new every day. One of my tactics is to have a list of extra tasks so I can to keep them involved with additional learning opportunities.
