Nice to know there's a method to my madness

I have luckily received great evaluations from students because of my usage of slides. I always wondered why it was so welcomed, especially since I make my adult learners take a lot of notes from my slides... but thanks to this I know why... they are learning by listening, seeing the slides, and writing my notes... appealing to every type of learner! I think as a word of caution though, reading directly off of them is extremely boring... slides should be used as a guide not as a script.

You definitely have the right idea, Vicki. I also try to pare down my PowerPoint presentations to the bare essentials, then print handouts 3 slides to a page (with the lines for notes, and I encourage students to write down more if necessary, telling them that some of the most useful insights may come from student comments as the presentation progresses). Video supplements are also great, but it's good to be certain that no copyright laws are violated in their use.

Hi Vicki, Wow Vicki! You have a lot going on in your classroom - great active learning for your students! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

"Death by Powerpoint" - love that phrase! I utilize a combination approach like Margarita. Some days I will start with a powerpoint, leave off some text or notes so the students must pay attention or lose vital information, then I will have them watch a video or demonstration, then do a review sheet over the lecture information and then onto lab for hands on learning. Works very well on a daily basis especially with my small class in learning medical imaging.

Hi Margarita, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, I agree that "Death by Powerpoint" is a terrible way to go ... LOL! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
