Learning Styles

After teaching a term I got to know what type of styles my students took for learning and studying. I am one of those people that I have to write down things. Take notes. I had one classmate that would just lean back in his chair and just take it all in. Now I know there are people that can just listen BUT when they take tests and fail them then I need to talk to them about there style of learning.

Hi Jennifer, Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using a nice mix of activities. Perhaps adding some game-type sessions? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

In teaching massage therapy, I find my students have a difficult time with lecture classes that do not involve a great deal of hands on work. One example would be a pathology class. I give written homework, that includes note cards so that they have to research and write the information. We also use powerpoint aides and videos. Do you have any other options?

Hi Douglas, Thanks for your post to the forum. Independent of class size, if we vary our delivery, we will reach the diverse learning styles.

Hi Sheila, Thanks for your post to the forum. From your description, It sounds like you, and some of your students, are definitely kinesthetic learners. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I am a listner and note taker mostly, though visual helps too. Some things require doing though, and I believe help in moving information from short term to long term memory (muscle memory in other words).

The size of class though does limit what you can do in a classroom. Smaller classes offer more opportunities for different learning styles. But class size isn't an excuse for poor teaching.

I have to do things hands on for me to learn. I also take. Lot of notes too. I noticed when doing lecture the ones who are taking in every note possible and the ones who barely take any notes, you can see the difference in test scores. I also have students who will write down every word said but do poorly on tests. But then when you get them in lab they are at the top of the class with learning and grades.

Hi Tammie, Thanks for your post to the forum. It is amazing how so many students have no clue about learning styles! Once they get it - it's like a light goes on! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan
