Knowing the Learing Styles of Your Students
I know our institution tests and has information on the learning styles of each student, but, doesn't share that information with the teaching staff. Why? Privacy acts can't be that restrictive.

Hi, I really enjoyed this class. I teach culinary and even after 10 years I have struggled trying to interpret different learning styles. I feel that I can be much more successful after taking this course
H Michael, Thanks for your post to the forum. That is an excellent example of what should happen in every first day of class - thanks for sharing!! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I get that inforamtion from the students themselves on day one of each new class. During the introduction, I make a point of of having the student's introduce themselves, where they are from, what they did before attending my class, and what the plan to do before they leave.
This usually breaks the ice and allows me some insight on how I may be able to relate the course content to their prior experience on an individual basis. After that, I advise them of the 4 main learning styles and ask what is the best way to teach them. It is always mixed with at least 3 of the 4 styles.
Hi Victor, Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that it would be rare to have such a homogeneous class but still, verying our delivery prepares students to adapt to other styles which they will encounter in the workplace. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I certainly agree that the information should be shared with the instructors as to style for several reasons. It should produce better outcomes for each student. A bit of a far fetched example suppose a small class was composed of students all with visual style learning. Mixing up the styles as you would do in most diverse classes would then mean that up to 75% of the effort would be off target.
Hi Tom, Has faculty asked to see that info? It is so valuable to faculty. Perhaps they do not want to share grades but that would not be learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.
