Generational?

Has anyone noticed a shift in students learning styles over the years?

Hi Carolyn, Thanks for your post to the forum. Experts beleive that we develop differnt styles of learning for several reasons - it could be because of the way we are genetically programmed, or as a result of early experiences or just because of the way our brains may develop differently. Personally I don't think that the constant exposure to technology determines learning style preference, but that it certainly is more appealing to certain learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

You know Susan that brings up a good point! Way back when, it appears that the dominant mode of delivering content to students was through lecture. Now the students (as you mentioned) are constantly exposed to technology that provides instantaneous results. Is learning style truly developed by the individual or I assume as in the past, the current environment? And what we have today are a dominent population of tactile learners?

Hello Philip,

That's a great question to ask! Being in online education, many students are getting more comfortable with having to read their textbooks online. I relate it back to the availability of tablets, playbooks, kindle, nooks, etc. There are also school apps that the student can download and be able to access the classroom in the palm of their hand, and be able to interact. Teaching nomadic students is quite an experience.

Hi Philip, Thanks for your post to the forum. Great question! As my graduate work was in Educational Technology, I am interested in how the use of technology impacts our effectiveness in teaching. But, your question brings up another issue that is very interesting. Students have been constantly exposed to visual stimulii in videos, gaming, etc. Has this then increased the percentage of students who learn best with delivery that is visually based? I intend see what research has been done on this! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.
