Hands on

Some students seem to do better in the classroom after they have performed the task. I think you should mix the classroom up with the lecture and props.

Denise,

I completely agree with you my students do respond better to the changes during class time.

i have to agree, some students learn better with hands on, rather than sit there and read off of a power point.

Hi Guy,
There isn't going to be "the right mix". The reason is that your classes will change every time you get a new batch of students. I have never had a class that was fully loaded with all visual learners, audio learners, etc. We have to do the best we can to be inclusive so as to touch upon all of our student's strongest learning style.

Hi Everett, Thanks for your post to the forum. The sooner and more often that students get to apply what they are learning, the better retention they will have. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Labs are great and provide students with an opportunity to let their creativity go! I teach electricity and the students also like it if i demonstrate principles during an experiment . This provides them with an opportunity to see the subject in a different light and they love when they get to replicate what i was doing!

I believe that. our courses use powerpoint discusion some, question and answer diagnostics, and hands on instructor lead practice/final tasks.we can see the difference in the students with each teach sequence.

I agree. This is a great tool to mix lecture with visual and physical back up. This really helps students grasp the material. As I discuss new material I will draw on the board and pass around a visual aid. I find this to be a proven method for delivery.

Hi Denise, Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that "mixing it up" is an excellent strategy when teaching to the learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I totally agree with you. Every Class I take several different methods of teaching to get our subject across. The students seem to respond better to the changes during the class time.

Hi Robin, Thanks for your post to the forum. Definitely, when students are encouraged to apply what they are learning and to use critical thinking, retention soars! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Hands on learning releases potential for a student to shine. This raises the learning bar when a student is able to learn a particular task and do it themselves. You gain retention of program materials, and critical thinking skills are developed for the assignment.

Hi Phil, Thanks for your post to the forum. That is indeed a problem. I see some of our lab instructors with rolling bags in the hallways. I suspect that they are carrying in their materials! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I agree with mixing the classroom experiences with lecture, props, etc. My frustration is that we instructors sharing a common lab don't seem to return things to a defined place, and when I need a laboratory property for use, I either cannot find the item or it is damaged (used). On the positive side, when items are retrievable, the labs can be so exciting and valuable.

Hi Willy, Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using an excellent mix of delivery formats! Best wishes for an excellent July quarter!

I like to use as many methods in a lesson as possible. I will usually lecture combined with a powerpoint, I will also pass out samples of product to allow the students to handle the materials. I would then follow with a demonstration of the procedure. Finally I would then let the students apply what they have learned through perfomance of the task.

Hi Tony, Thanks for your post to the forum. "Hands on" materials are also beneficial to other types of learners. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Having props is a great tool in the classroom. Using props gives students a greater understanding of how we use items in the real world.

i totally agree james .by having the props they tend to have a better understanding of the coarse content.

I totally agree james. its hard to find the right mix of lab and class excersises.
