Responding to students' answers
All the information in this module has been really good for me, on learning how to handle questions and answers from students
Hi Ginny - Welcome to ED 103! I think that your disclaimer is very refreshing! I'm sure that your students feel much less intimidated with you. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Juan,
I agree too. I think the most important thing is that when we don't know we are honest. I usually start my math class with a disclaimer of "I am human, I will make a mistake, and I don't have all the answers." Since yesterday was our first day of the new block, I noticed a lot of faces livened up when I said that.
Also it's amazing how students can pick up if you are not not being honest or are just not sure of what you are talking about.
I strongly agree, always be honest with yourself and your students, otherwise you'll be giving them incorrect information or confussing them.
There was a couple of times when I responded to a question that I was not 100% sure of. The class not knowing any better took my answer for fact. It bothered me that evening so I did more research and found that in fact I was wrong. The first thing I did the next morning was appologize
and correct my mistake. Interesting!
I find myself doing that as well. I call it stump the chump. If a student does present a question that I cannot answer. I will tell them I will have and answer for them by the end of the day. The point I bring up is that I will learn something and the student feels that your willing to help them. Keith
I agree with you that all the information is important and helps with learning how to direct question to and handle question address to you
Danny
I agree Ifeel the same, and I kwon thas some student already have the answer of there question
I think the key is to be honest. Do not try to answer a question you do not know the answer of. Otherwise they will find out and you loose your credibility.
I immediately google the answer. It also acknowledges to the students we are human.
I agree and will research the answer and then let them know. Not ashamed if I don't know the answer.
Yeah, I feel I should print out the material and take it to class with me for review and check. :>)
I agree. It confirms some things that I was already doing and inspired some new approaches.
