Real world problems
I have found that when I give the class a work packet that has real world problems from actual shops with cars that had these problems the students can see that they will be forced to try and solve problems that may not be in a diagnostic manual. This teaches them to look at the symptoms, analyze the information that is presented to them and try to come up to a single conclusion to help diagnois the problem. The students really seem to enjoy this type of brainstorming in their groups and it really shows how well they are getting the covered material.
thats a great idea, the student s will get a feel for the challeges that lie ahead
What Cory says is very valuable. real world problems are what the student are going to face, lets get then involved right away.
Maybe the problem is a lack of self confidence have you tried to help get them started or go thru a diag procedure with them I have that sometimes this helps to open the student up to new oppertunities.
In the last week of each course that I teach we have bugged car day. We have a box of real parts that have been "broken" and we replace the good with the bad so everything looks normal. Most but not all students love to try to find the problems we have hidden. As an instructor it is great to see them use what they have been learning to locate the trouble with the cars. But I still cant seem to get the student who wants to hang back and just watch to dive right in and get his feet wet. Anyone have some tricks they want to share? Thank you.
The music business, the real world problems our industry faces are very much new opportunities for our students which they can take advantage of or contribute to the problem.
