asking questions

asking questions lets you know if they are understanding and thinking about the subject

I agree with this...and if you randomly pick the students, this will really keep everybody focused as they do not know who you will pick on next.

In the courses that I teach (all hands on) I find that asking questions as we go keeps all the students on their toes and in focus with what they are doing.

The way I get the students that normally dont like to answer questions is to get their mind on what I am getting ready to ask. Sometimes alot of their fears comes from giving wrong answers and instead of asking.....
"Johhny, tell me how this widget works?"
I preface the question with......
"Now Johnny,.. We have been talking about these widgets for a while now, and I need you to tell me how these widgets work."

They seem to be more at ease when answering the questions.

I sometimes get them together in groups of three, and I have them Brain Storm ideas. In the process it developes thinking and questioning.I think coopertaive learning will ease the stress on shy students and increase participation

Hi Patricia- Spending individual time makes them feel more relaxed with you and since you are running the classroom they almost always be more relaxed in the classroom which should get them to open up more. At the very least they will not feel as threatened when you ask them a question in class.

Hi Patricia,

I agree with you. Asking questions is a great tool. However, we must also look at the students that are shy and don't like to speak in front of the classes. How are we able to get them to participate and open up? I have found that by spending additional time with them and having them open up and get more involved with their fellow students, they will eventually and gradualyy participate more in the class setting.

I have found that it is a great way to help students to open up and share what they know and have learned

Asking questions is a great way to get your students to open up and join in on the dicussion.
There are usually some students who will comment on a topic with no hesitation or fear of giving their opinion. This may lead others studentt to do the same and offer great insight to your topic.

true and if they are not getting it you can taylor your course to add what you have learned by asking them questions
