Asking questions

I think asking questions to the students during lecture keeps them alert and awake. It makes them stop and think and trouble shoot.

I agree, it keeps student engaged and on their toes. I like to keep a list of who I ask. I like to make sure everybody gets their turn.

I also think it can bring a different perspective to a discussion.

Hi Van - introducing your lesson in that way gets students interested as they've already begun to think about what they know about the topic. Best wishes! Susan

Sometimes when we begin a new topic I will ask a question based on what we will be learning to see if anyone has prior knowledge. I try to do it in a way that develops on prior knowledge/class content and also giving them the chance to apply a little critical thinking to come up with an answer. I try to make sure to give plenty of wait time and am always very supportive and any answer. Then I can lead the discussion/lecture further.

Hi Ulises - Asking questions during lecture will also let you know if you are getting the lesson across to your students. Susan

I agree with you on that point, asking questions during a lecture helps break up the monotony of some lectures and it helps re enforce the lessons that the students should have been learning.
