class discussions

I find that class gets more invalved on a discussion on the subject covered.gives more opportunity for the class to partiapate as a whole.

Hi I'm Marien Fernandez-Paris and I teach several math classes and I agree when I do class discussion and I allow them to explain to each other the different ways to resolve a problem, they feel more in a comfor zone: talk more and ask questions more.

Hi David - Good question. I sometimes say "John, I know that you know this answer but let's give someone else a chance, OK?" Best wishes - Susan

Have not had this issue yet but is their a proper or polite way of stopping the students that answer all the time and letting others have the chance to answer?

HI Shane - this is a common problem. Have you tried splitting your class into groups and putting the shy/tentative students into their own group? Best wishes - Susan

When I ask my questions at the end of each section I will always have one or two students that will always answer, so I have tried group dicussions and the same students seems to have a way of taking over. are there any other suggestions?

Hi Lynae - Welcome to ED 103! You make a good point- sometimes when you get your students talking as a group, you do learn that you may have missed something or that they have. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

I agree. When you invite the entire class to discuss a topic you may make a student who is afraid to ask questions feel more secure. Many times you will find out that you didnt successfully convey the point. This is a great way to find out how many students understand your message.
