Learning Chain

Learning chains are very similiar to following recipes. Instructors and students need to know that by starting with good ingredients (subject matter),understanding the procedures and not taking any shortcuts the results will usually be good. If 'links'like temperature and saturation that contribute to a mayonaisse breaking are rushed over or are not adequately understood then the result will very likely end in failure.

I have found that using the socratic method and reinforcement by repeat exposure to topics/concepts is most useful in building those links.

Yes it is very important to make sure everyone understands the questions I can see the look on their faces and then I make sure they "get-it" however anyway I can make them

Hi Jennifer- Absolutely correct and that is why we need to check for undertanding often. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

It is very hard for students to move forward when learning chains are not absorbed adequately. If you realize that a student has missed a link it is very important to review the concept until the student sees how it all works together.

HI Jim - Welcome to ED 103! Although I am not a medical instructor, I would think that you would need to work through the problem with the student several times to get them to understand the link.

Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

When you observe that a student does not understand the link between two steps in a problem set, how do you show them the link?
