Participation Poker

I use poker chips to award class participation. 3-4 different colors of chips, each worth a different point value, are awarded for different types of participation. Example: white chips = 1 point and are awarded for asking a question, green chips = 2 pts and are awarded for answering a question, blue chips = 3 points and are awarded for further explanation of an answer, red chips = 4 points for finding a practical application of the content. The students get really involved in discussion because it's a competition and the one with the most points at the end of the class gets a prize!

That is a great idea! I will try it with my students.

What a great idea! I can invision making this an ongoing "game" to last the entire class.

This sounds like a very good idea!

I have seen this also done by passing out candy. I wonder though if the quality of answers/questions is affected by the motivation to receive the reward.

that is a really cool idea! we have done something along those lines, but its on an individual basis for quiz reviews and most of the time their reward is a candy bar.
we have done a few other things where we have put the groups together to and based on how much work the group does, they get a prize at the end of the rotation.

How could you apply this to a college level course?

It just goes to show that virtually anything that stirs the competitive nature in students gets higher involvement. I've done the same with stickers...yes, they have fought over Batman stickers!

I also find that even the most introverted students are often competitive. I also play alot of games with questions to get the class invlolved. I really like the poker chip idea Holly!

Hi Holly - I love that idea! Thanks for sharing!Best wishes-Susan
