Engaging the student

What is the best technique you have used to engage students?

I will form pairs of students to work on a project and if I feel I can build on engaging students I will have later assignments completed with changing up those pairs.

Hi Marian- Excellent work! As you mention, students value learning when they understand the relevance. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Most of the students care more about the topic when they see how it relates to the real world, otherwise they don't find it relevant to them. So I'll cover topics and tell real life experiences that relate to those topics. At the end of the term, my students came to me and told me that out of all the instructors, they learned the most from me because of those stories and my life lessons.

I like to have them give me the colorful details of explaining something.... Like we are buying a car (what type of car?) So as the discussion grows they have contributed details that keep them interested in the discussion at hand.

I use different scenerios and we we role play in our Medical Assisting program. Sometime, I let the student's teach for the day to engage them.

Hi Tara - Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree - whenever we can get our student up and interacting the better engaged they will be! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

One of the best techniques I find that works at engaging students is to do an activity regarding the lesson. This seems to "open" things up a bit and relaxes the students to participate more. There tends to be interaction between students, it also helps with various learning techinuques as well.

Hi Cathleen - Thanks for sharing a great idea for getting whole-class interaction! Susan

Instead of singling out individuals I like involving 2 or 3 students at a time to become active in responding. Example, instead of asking a student what is one of the Big 8 allergies that restaurants are most concerned about, I hand over a marker and ask that student to 'draw' the allergy and then give the marker to whoever he wants to. Rotating around the room until the correct allergens have been identified (and many of them ARE allergies but not the ones we are focusing on)becomes an entire class project because everyone is watching the artwork that is being drawn!

Generally creating scenarios or simulating certain situations tend to engage students.

I fully agree! That technique works very well

I engage by using my personal experiences over 35 years asa a chef plus hands on work. This is truly effective in my world as a Chef Instructor.

Hi Brian - Thanks for your post to the forum. Although it may take a bit more planning and attention, personalizing questions to students is a great strategy! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I like to try to personalize questions so that the student feels more comfortable because he can discuss something he knows about.

Hi John - Thanks for your post to the forum. I have found that using scenarios that will allow my students to use the concepts that they are learning is excellent. If you can do this in a Team environment - even better! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
