Questioning as a Teaching Technique

questioning students is a great method to assess the student's level of understanding, In many cases students shed new light on a subject with their questions/answers by approaching the subject from a totally unexpected angle. This can often result in new answers or creative thought, and this subsequently leads to expansion of everyone’s (especially the educator’s) knowledge of the subject. it's always encourgable to respond positively to all answers given.

Hi Geary- Thanks for a very interesting response to the idea of "questioning"! There is so much that can enrich a class though sharing of experiences. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

I agree with the the student's answers increasing the the educator's knowledge. Several of my students have spent years fighting terrorism first hand overseas which brings first hand knowledge to the class discussion. Students love to question and argue with the text material that presents a differrent type of war than what they experienced. Students question the authors knowledge from what perspective did the text material come from. The use of questions to draw out the feelings of those who have fought for this country shows the intensity and passion of their experiences and suffering that are not recorded in the text. The use of questions in this class has definately offered an exchange of information that sometimes is scary and filled with passion. In this class, the questions teach more than the text.
