class perticipation

I make every student know from the first day of class that they will have to perticipate in class for a grade. By the end of class the students are glad they participated. It got them out of their shell, they made new friends and starting to make better grades in other classes.

I also let my students know that participation is part of their grade. You will get the same students that give the answers to everything, but I will periodically ask someone who does not participate for his/her answer. Reminding them that their answer is not a dumb answer.

Getting all to participate is a challenge, but the ones who don't say much I try to keep them in mind and approach them 1 on 1. Sometimes they don't know me. I encourage them in discussion, by letting them know there is not always a right or wrong answer, that allows them to think a minute about what they might like to say. Group discussion is always helpful.
Helping them appreciate the class is for them to use info outside in the real world.

Hi Shanta- Thanks for your post to the forum. Getting students into collaborative efforts is always good practice! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

What I usually do is ask the students to get in groups then work on a certain part of the lesson to make sure everyone agrees
