Importance of Questions by Instructors
Education should be a dialogue, an exchange between instructor and student.Give students a chance to ask questions. Encourage questions.
Questions will tell you what students understand/don't understand about what you are teaching.

I am finding this course particularly helpful to me. While I wholeheartedly agree that education should be a dialogue, I am realizing that I need to use questioning more in my teaching. I am learning quite a bit so far in this course.
Hi Fred - Thanks for sharing some good examples of methods to increase participation! Susan

I encourage questions in my Health Insurance class to make sure that the students understand the materia. I will ask them questions in a round about way to foster classroom participation. This method brings about collaboration among students in seeking out the answer. Also, there are times I will give them the wrong answer, pause, in hopes that someone will correct me. This makes the learning environment fun and keep the class on point. I also advise the them that the material that is being reviewed if they don't know the answer then those are the questions they need to write down for reiteration.
Hi Donta, There is something really exciting about an open exchange between teacher and students! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I agree with you that education should in deed be and open exchange between the instructor and the students. Learning is a life long experience and if students feel comfortable asking questions it will stimulate growth.
I encarage the students to not only ask, but give me their answer also.
I agree...I love when the students ask questions. It leads me to believe they are truly interested in learning what I'm teaching or materials I have given them to reasearch and study on their own. Some students have their own motivation as to why they ask questions...to see if the instructor knows what she's talking about! I invite my students to ask questions always!
Thanks, Nancy. I find this to be so true in the college environment especialley among frehmen.
Thanks, Trevor. I believe that the exchange you mention not only offers students an opportunity to gain knowledge and create rapport, but the opportunity for students to receive emotional pats on the back for their efforts. The circular communication process breeds confidence and can diminish the risks of participating in the sometimes intimidating climate of a college classroom.
Hi Trevor- Thanks for your post to the forum. I so liked your comment that education should be a "dialogue"! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
