You can get students more involved by asking them to do research on a particular subject and do an oral presentation. It doesn't have to be anything long; and they can give their opinion. Also, you can ask for constructive criticism on certain things regarding their report; for example: what could the student have done differently?
I find just talking to them about the subject and relating it to other things they know and like works really well. It usually then leads to comparison questions and eventually more in depth discussion into the new subject.
Hi Patricia, Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using some great strategies to get students involved in questioning. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Assigning reading assignments so that students can be prepared for discussion. Giving questions that they can prepare for ahead of time and then in class ask question not only that they have prepared for but as you stated ask them in a different way. Often this helps the multiple levels of learning in class.
Hi SEPTIMIU, Using group discussion is less intimidating then direct questioning. Susan
you get students more involved by rewarding them with credit points and by getting them involved in group discussion...
by creating different ways to involve students for example power point that has question or handout that involve the student participation
Students stay interested and learn more from the class when instructors use, many different techniques to involve them in the learning process. These range all the way from very short and simple techniques like telling a story about the material to more involved activities like small student work groups doing collaborative learning projects.
