Deer's in the headlights

What can you do if you ask questions and you get "deer's in the headlights" responses or you just hear crickets?

Hi John, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, in order for our students to learn, they must first be engaged! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

My #1 rule in the classroom is to be enthusiastic and engaging. Walk around the room, make eye contact (3 sec. max) and be sure you really do have their attention. If no one can respond you might want to check your lesson plan because there is that possibility you didn't cover that subject well enough. The worst educators I've ever experienced as a student could instruct well enough but they couldn't teach.

I like the idea of referring back to the material you covered and give them hints until they get the answer.

Hi Robert, I would try putting students into groups and asking questions. You may want to make a competition out of it. (Candy for the winning team?) Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Sometimes giving hints helps. I will start to go back over the material and "build up" to the answer. Sometimes this helps the students remember the answer.
