Getting students to be more involved in class participation

How do you get you students involved?

Hi Shannon, Thanks for your post to the forum. Being able to "teach back" is the ultimate test of knowledge acquisition. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Student to student teaching is important, so I like to assign certain parts of material for students to present. They get to teach that section to their classmates. They design a presentation power point, discussion questions, and I fill in any gaps with additional information, added critical thinking questions, etc...I feel that some students can grasp certain concepts better when they come from a peer.

Asking the students questions and getting the class to answer the questions gives them a certain satisfaction that they accomplished something.

Hi Sherise, Thanks for your post to the forum. I think that students find working in groups less scary than direct questioning. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I found one of the best ways is to divide in groups. Have them ask and discuss. This teaches the students to listen and see how others may come from a different perspective

Wow Latoya, You have a lot of active learning going on in your classroom! Great work! Susan

Some ways that I get my students to participate in class are: having them do group activities,we play games in the classroom, I allow them to create games related to the topic, Q&A, the day before a test I will review with the class then allow them to break into study groups and make flash cards to help them study (this gives me the opportunity to interact with each group and encourage more thinking, we watch videos then have a class discussion, and I ask them to read material from the powerpoint presentation.

Hi Dorothy, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, the more relevant that we can make the concepts our students are learning, the better they will retain the information. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

It sometimes helps to relate the subject matter to something that is familiar to many of the students.

Hi Felicia, I try to find activities that will involve all my students. Sometimes breaking students into groups to work on a problem, playing a "Jeopardy" games, using student presentations etc. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
