Positive Reinforcement

If I tell a student his/her answer is incorrect, I usually follow with “…but, I do admire your enthusiasm!”

Many times students are on the right tract when answering questions and I give them credit for that even if they don't have the complete concept. I often tell them they get a "gold star" for trying, and I ask the rest of the class "who else wants a gold star?"

Hi Claudia, Thanks for your post to the forum. Positive reinforcement is essential - great technique! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I like this one Timothy. What I do if a student gives a wrong answer or does something wrong, I praise the student about something else he or she did really well and after that we talk about the wrong answer or the mistake the student made. So far it seems to work for me.

I feel positive reinforcement is important to our students however too much of it causes the student to sometimes become arrogant. I feel that some of the best reinforcement is from within the student themselves when they are prepared for class and can answer the questions asked correctly and get confirmation from their peers.

Positive Reinforcement is important to help students feel encouraged to continue to do their best and continue with their studies.

I always applaud their effort for incorrect answers and point them in the direction to find the correct answer.

I believe positive reinforcement is a very important technique to practice. Of course the improper answer or behavior need to be corrected but without belittling the student.

Hi Timothy, I really like that one!!
