Not knowing
I am a human being and I will let my class know that I will not always know the answer. If I don't know the answer I look it up and I am honest with the class. Better to learn it right then make up something or go around it.
If I don't know the answer to a student's question I often say "Let's Google it". We will spend some time finding the answer on the internet by reading articles or forums. This way, we all learn together.
I also tell my students that there is no shame in having to look up an answer. The human body is a complex and diverse organism and there are very few of us who can remember EVERYTHING there is to know about it.
What is there to disagree with it is spot on and the comcept allows the student to grow knowing that one never stops learning, hey even my instructor.
I also agree, I always get back to my students when I don't know the answer to a question. I feel that researching the answer and responding to student benefits both the student and myself.
I also agree, when changing the subject because you do not know the answer is a bad habit. The sharp students will see this pattern and may think poorly of you.
I agree with your answer. As faculty, not knowing an answer to a question proves to our students that we are in fact human. Showing a willingness to find the answer proves to our students our level of committment to them. This goes a long way with building trust and respect among our students.
Hi Tammie, That is a very wise way to handle it! Thanks for your post to the forum. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
